In 2013 Animal Liberation Victoria investigated a “Bred Free Range” pig farm in Meredith, Victoria, as part of a series of investigations into free range farms endorsed by the RSPCA. In 2011 the James Knight farm was accredited by the RSPCA’s “Paw of Approval Scheme” and sold their “free range pork” to independent butchers and as part of the Otway Pork brand. Neither James Knight nor the RSPCA will confirm if they continue to be accredited.
Our investigations on the James Knight farm uncovered cruelty, cannibalism and a vastly different scene to those depicted by the RSPCA’s promotional propaganda. The investigations found the whole property to be run down and dilapidated with dead bodies in various forms of decay left lying around to rot, pigs living up to their shoulders in their own waste, filthy water troughs, rat infested eco shelters, barren muddy areas for mothers to raise their young and pigs cannibalising the bodies of other dead pigs.
Free range is a fraud that is betraying the animals and the public. Don’t buy the lies! Take action now…
Disgraceful they should be jailed…
Disgusting. These people should be in jail.
I feel so sad for the pigs but happy that ALV is helping. Surely this terrible treatment on non-humans must end soon!! How can people just turn a blind eye to this suffering?
People appear to be turning a blind eye because the majority of them have NO IDEA!!
This is BIG INDUSTRY ~ They don’t want us to know the Truth!
People are slowly becoming more aware. Join the AJP (Animal Justice Party) They are trying to get a Representative into the Upper House ~ So they can be a voice for all the Hundreds of Thousands of Animals who are abused every day!
What is the current state of this? Has RSPCA responded? Any news from Otway?
I am disgusted! If you can’t trust the rspca who can you trust, and to think I donate money to the rspca, for what, to help contribute to this deceitful act!
They should be jailed.
I am only just learning more about free range fraud but I don’t think I can ever eat pork again.
We will not be eating anymore pork. That is absolutely disgusting. The farmers should be made to answer for their treatment of these poor animals.
it breaks my heart that people think just because its an animal and cant answer back, that they deserve or allow to live like this, the fact they are eating their own is awful and shows how hungry they are, the bodies scattered, there’s a point where they like mud but not to that extent, it breaks my heart and disgusts me, you dont allow a dog to live like this, it would be taken away so why let this happen.
I feel very saddened and embarrassed. I have been buying Otaways products in the belief I was making a difference…..:.thank you for bringing this to my attention, I will not be purchasing any of these products again and will be spreading the word about this investigation far and wide.
This is horrific! OMFG – I don’t normally use expletives but this situation definitely warrants some action and swift criminal charges. Surely these places get checked once in a while! These poor animals!
I trusted the RSPCA and used to drive miles out of my way to buy Otway pork. I felt happy that if I could not give it up entirely at least I was not promoting the suffering of pigs. I feel betrayed and disgusted that humans can treat animals in this way. How very sad
I can’t understand why the police were arresting the rescuers. Were they turning a blind eye to the conditions in which these animals were living? What about the local ASPCA? Were they so turning a blind eye to what was going on?
